Empowering Deaf Youth and Adults Through the Healing Power of the Ocean by catching their first wave.

The Philosophy

A visual world doesn't need spoken words.

The feeling of "stoke" is a shared smile, a happy soul, and the pure, unfiltered joy derived from riding waves. The ocean doesn’t care about spoken language; it communicates entirely through energy, motion, and rhythm. That is the "silent wave" we ride—a place where the Deaf Community can connect seamlessly with nature and each other on our own terms. Our mission is simple, we want to help you catch your first wave and experience the stoke thousands of surfers around the world enjoy.

The Silent Wave Project: Mission Statement

To break the isolation often experienced in Deaf lives through the power of the ocean and the forests of Oregon, the Silent Wave Project creates inclusive outdoor experiences for Deaf and hard-of-hearing youth and adults. Through mentorship, shared language, and the transformative ‘First Stoke’ of surfing, we foster confidence, connection, and belonging across generations. We open pathways to the outdoors—proving that when we are grounded in our shared language and culture, our impact echoes far beyond the shore. Our mission is simple, we want to help you catch your first wave!

Lessons for life.

Navigating a hearing world comes with a unique set of daily struggles, and systemic barriers can easily lead to isolation. The Silent Wave Project was founded to provide Deaf youth with the mentorship, community, and resilience needed to face these challenges head-on.

By taking a break from the noise of daily life and stepping onto a surfboard, our participants build the self-confidence and strong peer networks necessary to combat isolation, overcome barriers, and build a foundation for a thriving future.

Expanded Missions Goals

Immersive Forest Retreats

The healing rhythm of the ocean is only half the journey. Through partnerships across the Pacific Northwest, we host overnight camping retreats that combine surfing with deep forest exploration, allowing participants to build deeper relationships and unplug in a supportive environment.
